Instant ON APs can now set their inventory name as the hostname in the DHCP requests.
The configured inventory name is set as "hostname" under option-12 of the DHCP DISCOVER Packet.
This allows an administrator to better identify a device on the DHCP server.
The characters in the DHCP option is more limited than the device name in the UI (APP and the portal).
The maximum number of characters supported for the hostname is 32.
Colons and dashes are automatically converted to “dashes”(-).
Configured the device name as “AP:12:LAB” from the Mobile Application.
From the Uplink capture, we can see that the colons are replaced with dashes and the AP name is referred to “AP-12-LAB”.
The hostname gets updated in the switch LLDP information.
If there are more special characters mentioned in the AP’s hostname then the AP’s serial number is set as the hostname in the DHCP option-12.
Configured the device name as “&@&&)@” from the Mobile Application.
From the Uplink capture, we can see that the AP name is referred to “CNHVJSSBCG”.
The hostname gets updated in the switch LLDP information.
