  • 1.  8-port switches randomly rebooting

    Posted 11 days ago

We have four 8-port (1830 8G JL810A) switches in the office and all of them, for at least a week, have been randomly rebooting, or stop reporting into the cloud and need to be power cycled. This happens at least once per day and often multiple times per day, at different times for each of the switches.

According to the portal (we have automatic firmware turned on) they're all up to date with the latest firmware.

I've tried starting a support chat but after waiting 10 minutes or so I got a message that the support chat is not available. Why then don't they convert my request to a ticket? That's not a great support model.

The logging seems so sparse the only thing I could find is in the Alerts section for the site:

"This Instant On device restarted due to power loss or an unexpected condition."

There are no power issues here as all of our non-InstantOn switches have been fine, same with all our computers, lights, etc. and the switches don't all go offline or reboot at the same times.

Anyway, wondering if anyone out here in the community has seen this and knows of the cause or maybe a solution.

I have the same 8-port (1830 8G) you have but I do not use the cloud to manage it.   I manage it locally and mine has been up for 34 days with no reboots.  Running version 2.9.0 (last time I updated the firmware)  I always apply updates only after they have been out for at least 30 days unless the update is critical.   Have been burned by using automatic firmware updates in the past.

    Hi Lowell,

I have two 1830 24port switches at my home and they have been rock solid so far, they're been up for the 22 days since I installed them. ( I do use local management mode rather than "cloud" which could be a factor).

Can you please describe your network topology?

    • Are you using static IP addresses or DHCP to assign addresses to the switches?
    • Is there any outbound traffic restrictions on your network, for example, is there any firewalls which perform traffic or content blocking?
    • What kind of Internet connection do you have, is it a wired or cellular connection?
    • What kinds of devices are connected to the switches, are they permanently connected, like for example PCs / printers or temporarily connected devices like laptops?
    • Do you have a single or multiple Ethernet cables connecting the switches to the rest of the network?
    • Is there any VLANs defined on the switches?

    Kind regards,

    Travis Thorne

Thanks for the replies. I don't know what the root cause was, but the switches stopped rebooting/failing when I turned off a network-noisy computer on the network. Interesting that only the Aruba switches on our network were so negatively impacted by the network noise. We also have Sophos, Datto, Dell, and Ubiquiti managed switches and none of them were impacted.
